Favoring Generalists over Specialists: How Attentional Biasing Improves Perceptual Category Learning

چکیده
A model of cortical lea.rning is proposed, \vhieh incorpora.tes supervised feedback using two forms of attention: (i) feature-specific attention which allmvs the nct.vwrk to learn associations between specific feature conjunctions (or categories) and out.puts, and (ii) nonspecific att.entionaJ "vigilance'' which biases this learning when the associations appear to be incorrect. Attentional vigilance. improves lea.ming if it f<lvors, via. lcamcd modulatory weights, qeneralist categories over specialist categories. Fluctuating selection and the maintenance of individual and sex-specific diet specialization in free-living oystercatchers.
Fluctuating and disruptive selection are important mechanisms for maintaining intrapopulation trait variation. Nonetheless, few field studies quantify selection pressures over long periods and identify what causes them to fluctuate. Diet specialists in oystercatchers differ in short-term payoffs (intake), but their long-term payoffs are hypothesized to be condition dependent. We test whether ph...
متن کاملDeep Learning and Attentional Bias in Human Category Learning
Human category learning is known to be a function of both the complexity of the category rule and attentional bias. A classic and critically diagnostic human category problem involves learning integral stimuli (correlated features) using a condensation rule, or separable stimuli (independent features) using a filtration rule. Human category learning shows differential learning based on category...
متن کاملElectrical Neuroimaging Reveals Timing of Attentional Control Activity in Human Brain
Voluntarily shifting attention to a location of the visual field improves the perception of events that occur there. Regions of frontal cortex are thought to provide the top-down control signal that initiates a shift of attention, but because of the temporal limitations of functional brain imaging, the timing and sequence of attentional-control operations remain unknown. We used a new analytica...
متن کاملBinocular fusion and invariant category learning due to predictive remapping during scanning of a depthful scene with eye movements
How does the brain maintain stable fusion of 3D scenes when the eyes move? Every eye movement causes each retinal position to process a different set of scenic features, and thus the brain needs to binocularly fuse new combinations of features at each position after an eye movement. Despite these breaks in retinotopic fusion due to each movement, previously fused representations of a scene in d...
متن کاملPersistence of Coastal Vegetation in Supratidal Zones of Northern China
Coastal vegetation comprises a number of coastal specialists and terrestrial generalists. It remains unclear how they persist on disturbed and undisturbed coastal conditions. We tested the hypothesis that coastal specialists may be superior to terrestrial generalists on supratidal zones of coasts, but their superiority can be influenced by human disturbances. Eight separate sandy coasts of the ...
